2005-1 Hmongs and other Tribal People of North Vietnam

During the summer of 2005, I traveled to Hanoi and then took an overnight train to the beautiful town of Sapa in the foothills of North Vietnam's border with China. Sapa is surrounded by several villages inhabited by the Black Hmongs, Red Dao and the Tay tribes. I trekked through many of these villages for about ten days and photographed various tribal folks in their native colorful clothes. I was captivated by the beauty of these people, especially women, whether working in the rice fields, weaving or making clothing, tending to their animals or taking care of their children. Women do most of the farming and family caretaking while the men appear to be lazing around. I took many people photographs in the ethnic markets in Sapa as well in the infamous Bac Ha Sunday market, which is primarily attended by Flower Hmong people, in their gorgeous colorful clothing, who descend from the neighboring hills.
