2005-2. Adivasis--The Tribal People of Chattisgarh, Central India

Chattisgarh is one of the newer states of India and is the home to various tribal people who have lived there for centuries. During the fall of 2005, I visited several villages inhabited by ethnic people belonging to the Murya, Dhurva, Marya and the Dhongra tribes. These beautiful people live in forests, are very self reliant as they mainly live off the land, have their own tribal laws and participate in their unique rituals and dances. I was privileged to photograph several of these rituals and also to share in their hospitality including the sharing of their indigenous local liquor--Mahuua. I also photographed many Hats (weekly markets) where the ethnic people come for social interchange and for trading goods. I was lucky to photograph some members of the hostile Bonda tribe (near Orrissa) on their way to a market, since visitors are banned by the Govt. of India, from going to their villages where several incidents of violence have occurred recently. The warmth and welcoming nature of all these tribal people, in sharing their unique life style with my photo group, was indeed memorable, especially in the light of the fact that they have been exploited for centuries.
