2006-3. Faces and Places in Bhutan

Bhutan is often called the "Crown Jewel of the Himalayas" and is a stunningly beautiful country. I spent two weeks in November 2006 traveling from Paro and Thimpu (the capital) in western Bhutan all the way to the country's central-eastern heartland into Bhumtang Valley, stopping at peaceful villages, visiting markets and homes to interface with traditional Bhutanese people. I was very impressed by the progress made under the current regime resulting in ever-increasing "Gross Happiness Index" for the Bhutanese people. Everyone has a home, love for their traditions and a great appreciation for preserving their pristine environment. Each Bhutanese wears traditional dress - Kira for women and Gho for men - at all schools, administrative offices and formal functions.
